Southsea Castle - Hampshire - Castle

Southsea Castle - Hampshire - Castle

Distance 5.53 miles (8.85 km)
Southsea Castle was built by Henry VIII between 1544 and 1545 to protect Portsmouth against possible French invasion. Its revolutionary design provided for the most efficient use of guns in attack or defence now that artillery dominated warfare. In the early 19th century, the castle was substantially altered to accommodate extra guns and a larger garrison of 200 men. The most significant addition of this period was an underground tunnel around the moat, which you can still enter. The castle was only withdrawn from active service in 1960. In our amazing Time Tunnel the Ghost of the Castle's first master gunner guides you through the most dramatic scenes from the castle's eventful history.

Portsmouth has been home to the Royal Navy for over five hundred years. The historic dockyard contains Nelson's flagship HMS Victory alongside HMS Warrior, the first iron clad battleship. The Royal Naval Museum has the remains of Henry VIII's warship the Mary Rose, which was raised from the seabed in 1982. It was also in Portsmouth that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created the world renowned detective "Sherlock Holmes". Portsmouth is also host to the continental Ferry Port.
