We Booked This Hotel To Be Close To The Start...
We booked this hotel to be close to the start of the Great South Run in which we were participating. It was also used by most of the Elite runners too. There was a nice atmosphere and the staff were heavily in demand, but remained pleasant friendly and accommodating. All in all we were very pleased with the Holiday Inn."

It is a beautiful house. Our room was in the new extension and we were very pleased with it. It was very light and airy with nice finishing touches.,The Churchill was just a short stroll away from the centre of York which was perfect for us travelling with our 9 year old son. At night it was very quiet and the beds were extremely comfortable. We were pleased that our sons bed was a proper full sized single bed and not a divan or sofa bed. We found all the staff to be very pleasant and helpful. The breakfasts were delicious. We shall certainly make a return trip!,

Southsea Castle - Hampshire - Castle

Southsea Castle - Hampshire - Castle

Distance 0.92 miles (1.47 km)
Southsea Castle was built by Henry VIII between 1544 and 1545 to protect Portsmouth against possible French invasion. Its revolutionary design provided for the most efficient use of guns in attack or defence now that artillery dominated warfare. In the early 19th century, the castle was substantially altered to accommodate extra guns and a larger garrison of 200 men. The most significant addition of this period was an underground tunnel around the moat, which you can still enter. The castle was only withdrawn from active service in 1960. In our amazing Time Tunnel the Ghost of the Castle's first master gunner guides you through the most dramatic scenes from the castle's eventful history.
