Lowestoft, the most easterly town in the United Kingdom, was established as a fishing village in the early 14th century but the decline in the fishing area has seen a substantial decrease in the number of vessels fishing from our town. It now has a thriving tourist industry with close links with Great Yarmouth making it a popular holiday destination for holidaymakers. The town prides itself on having won the European blue flags for the cleanliness of its beaches. It receives many thousands of visitors each year, the busiest time being over the two-day air show, where 450,000 were in attendance over the two-day period in July 2001.
