Welcome to Nanny Brow

Telephone: 015394 33232 015394 33232

Hotel Description

Nanny Brow stands majestically on the steep fell side of Loughrigg on its own private crag just west of Ambleside with unrivalled views down the River Brathay to the Lakeland Fells beyond. A short walk through semi ancient woodland takes you to a superb lookout to watch the sail boats on Windermere and a further pull takes you to Lily Tarn, Ivy Crag and miles of superb walks over Loughrigg Fell. The house is an Arts and amp; Crafts gem built in 1904 by the distinguished architect Francis Whitwell FRIBA. Whitwell, who practiced with Guy Dawber in London, came to Ambleside to settle and built his family home using traditional Lakeland stone on the solid rock of Nanny Brow. This imposing country house boasts many subtle features so characteristic of the Arts and amp; Crafts movement including gentle motifs of animals and flowers in the plasterwork, oak panelling and leaded oak picture windows facing the valley and the hills. We have sought to combine the relaxing air of a family home with excellent levels of comfort and service offering just ten bedrooms. Many of the original Arts and Crafts features have been retained, and complemented with antique furniture and contemporary fabrics. We have an elegant lounge for guests to use at their leisure, a cosy sitting room with bar and five acres of grounds to relax and explore as well as our own private car park. Furniture of the period is offset by luxuriously modern en suites, sumptuous beds, free wireless internet and digital televisions. All the rooms are individually designed and furnished with most having stunning views of the Lakeland fells. You will find our accommodation spotlessly clean, warm and spacious with friendly service and an award winning breakfast, just a few of the reasons why we have been awarded 5 stars by the AA. Come join us and let us help you unwind......

A Rare Treat
Our stay at Nanny Brow was an an experience of exceptional detail, nothing was too much to ask and when a taxi was not available and without any hesitation, the owners offered to drive us down to Ambleside for our cruise. Our room Skelet was lovely and the bed gave us a good night sleep with a great shower. The staff are very friendly and helpful and we would stay again without any hesitation.

Beautiful Location And Lovely People
From the moment my fiancée and I entered Nanny Brow, we felt as though we were staying in a home away from home. The charming décor, extensive facilities, and most importantly the kind and approachable staff made our trip to the Lake District more memorable than I could have imagined.

I had planned on proposing to my girlfriend (now fiancée) during our stay, and Sue was fantastic. She was more than helpful in suggesting proposal locations, and you never felt as though anything you asked her was too much trouble. She went out of her way to make sure our special weekend was magical, organising champagne, chocolates and room decoration when we arrived back after the proposal. She also sent me through restaurant recommendations which helped me find two of the best restaurants I have ever visited, as well as booking taxis for us.

Our room was beautiful - very clean, warm, light and perfectly sized. We had a very large en suite, and a really powerful shower. There was also surprisingly quick internet inside the room, which was great for contacting friends and family to tell them the good news. The breakfast was great - locally sourced and cooked to perfection.

Nanny Brow's location is brilliant - the views from the front are magnificent. It is also within very short driving distance of some of the most beautiful spots in the Lake District (the Langdale Valley is just 10 minutes down the road and offers some really beautiful scenery).

Overall, we had an amazing stay at Nanny Brow, and I am sure that my fiancée and I will be returning at some point in the future to re-live what was a magical weekend for us both.

Nanny Brow Weekend
Spent a very pleasant weekend here in August.Mark who greeted us warmly gave us a guided tour of the hotel with detailed explanations. The room(Lingmoor) was luxurious and the bathroom with a double shower was quite unlike anything we had had experienced before.

Before arrival we had received a detailed list of recommended eating places in the area, together with a lot of useful information.

The breakfast provision was superb as was the staff throughout the hotel. Nothing was too much trouble- when we couldn`t hire ataxi locally, Sue offered to drive us there for a donation in the charity box. She and Peter went to great lengths to explain all our searching questions about the restoration of the building. We have given Nanny Brow a 5 star rating and will certainly come back again. The only niggle we had was a stronger light needed over the bathroom mirror and I understand this is being attended to.

Pearl Anniversary Trip
We stayed at the nanny brow for two nights to celebrate our pearl wedding anniversary. Our room was lovely with beautiful views and some nice touches-homemade cake and even an anniversary card and bubbly. Breakfast on both days was delicious with good quality produce and lots of choice. We would highly recommend the nanny brow and definitely plan to return.
