A Real Gem In The Lake District
A real gem in the Lake District

My partner and I stayed at the Glaramara for two nights in February.

We were delighted with the hotel and staff.

We stayed in room 210 which faces the rear of the property; there wasn’t a mountain view, but very lovely nevertheless. The room was bright and comfortable with a large bed, plenty of storage, hairdryer and coffee making facilities. An iron and board were provided promptly when requested. The en-suite was spotlessly clean and modern with a shower cubicle and complementary toiletries. The only sound that could be heard was birds singing. Rooms do not have televisions which is great because you have to actually talk to each other and enjoy the surroundings! For people desperate to watch particular programmes or the news, there is a television available in the conference room for use at any time. The hotel boasts a boot room/ drying room which is ideal for walkers. The bar area has been refurbished to a high standard and offers a great selection of gins, whiskeys, wines and two good ales on draft. Drinks are very reasonably priced.

Whilst the main ‘lounge’ area is dated, it has a beautiful open fire and large windows so you can relax and watch the sun set behind the fells. The owner explained that he intends to sympathetically refurbish the room in keeping with the 1930’s building, retaining some of the original features. We look forward to seeing the results when we return!

The hotel provides an amazing breakfast which will fuel you for your day, served between 8am and 9am (though can be earlier upon request). You are able to help yourself to a selection of cereals, fruit, yogurts, croissants, juices, speciality teas, coffee and a cooked English breakfast (the sausage is a must, very tasty).

Totally geared up for walkers, a packed lunch for £7 consists of: a freshly made sandwich, cake, cereal bar, crisps, fruit and bottle of water. Light lunch at the hotel is also available between midday and 3pm.

Dinner selections need to be made at breakfast- unsure why previous reviewers have said this is a problem? I looked forward to my evening meal all day knowing what I was going to eat.

Dinner was served at 7.30 which suited us perfectly. There was a lovely atmosphere with all guests seated at the same time.

The menu was varied with four selections for starter, main and dessert. The food was plentiful and flavoursome. The venison casserole and lamb shank were fantastic.

Compared to other restaurant prices in the Lake District, we found the hotel good value for money - £26 per person for three courses plus coffee to finish.

From the hotel you can walk to Scafell Pike, Great Gable and Glaramara.

The charm of the hotel is that it is isn’t near anything else- you won’t get any phone signal so you can ‘drop off the Earth’ and enjoy peace and tranquility. There is free WiFi at the hotel should you need to contact with the outside world. The hotel is a short drive to Derwent Water and Keswick should you want to explore the shops.

My partner is a mountain leader who aims to return with groups of walkers as the hotel provides such a good base. The friendly and professional staff are a real credit. I would highly recommend this hotel. Do not hesitate to book in.

Idyllic Location
Great countryside location. Woke up to sheep on hills outside my window. Staff friendly. Food was excellent. My room was a twin though classed as single with nice ensuite. I was located on ground floor near an exit, which was great for my dog going out during night.

On the negative side:

There is a 10.00 per night charge for dog...not shown in

Breakfast finishes early at 9am. I was still eating and everything was cleared.

No fan in room and normally that eould be fine but we had a particulary hot spell..didnt sleep until 4am then up early for breakfast.

Having said all that it was a very good accommodation snd I would not hesitate recommending it to anyone.

A Jolly Fine Place To Stay!
Located in the reasonably remote and beautiful Borrowdale Valley, Glaramara impresses from the outset. Modern, fresh and well appointed, with welcoming and helpful staff, I was made to feel very at home. My room was a single with good sized en-suite shower room and views to the hills, so whilst the absence of a TV was not a concern for me, it may be for some. The food was simply excellent with fresh ingredients and skilled preparation very obvious. There are many hills to walk from the door, and I imagine many more activities besides. To top it off, the price was very reasonable. Highly recommended

Another Excellent Stay At Glaramara
Easter 2017 with SPICE

This is my 3rd visit over a period of 10 years and every time I go the accommodation gets better. My shared en-suite room was very clean and comfortable. Nothing was too much for the staff. The food was outstanding with a large choice of gluten free meals. The walk wise organised walks were well planned and accommodated all levels of fitness to suit a variety of needs. The only problem was getting a bus back from Keswick. Not a great idea over a bank holiday! I will definitely be back. Well done.

One Night In Seatoller
This is a great base point for rambling and has amazing views from the hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was fantastic. The room was spotless and the bed comfortable. There is no tv in the room itself but who needs tv when you can read a book by the fire in the bar. There is a tv near the bar for any who get withdrawal symptoms. As a single female among a multitude of male guests, I never felt uncomfortable at all. I'd be very happy to stay here again.

Great Value For Money
The overall experience was very good. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The selection of food at breakfast was great, helped by the fact it was sekf-service. We only had dinner here one night but what I had was good and plentiful.

I stayed in one of the older single rooms with shared bathroom. It was a good size, clean and had good views of the fells.

The location is great with access to Seathwaite, Stonethwaite and Honister right on the doorstep.

On the down side, the shower cubicles were a little small. I had to stand in the shower so i could open the door to get out.

I would definately stay there again

Good Stay, Room For Improvement.
Whilst i cannot fault the refurbished parts of the hotel, the older single rooms leave a little to be desired. It was boiling in the room despite leaving the window open all night. The outside temperature was quite warm, but the room itself was almost unbearable. As i understand it those rooms are being faded out. Otherwise i cannot fault the hotel or staff.

Wedding Venue
From the very beginning when we visited Glaramara House to have a tour of their 'Wedding venue' Our daughter and fiancé (Amy and James) were taken in by the beautiful location but what clinched the deal was the welcome they received from Kevin and David. Hence two years later they got married there, and as the mum and dad of the bride, the help, and advice we received was 10 out of 10. The accomodation was modern and of a very high standard, and we love that the charm of the place has been maintained through their recent refurbishments - ambience maintained. We will defiantly return on our own or with a small group. Gary and I would like to wish Glaramara and their staff a happy and prosperous future, (not sure I should be spreading the word as it may become to popular 😄 ), all the best and see you soon. Ps. Simple Pleasures
Value for money, for the location, which is superb. The nameslates on your self-service breakfast table are a really personal touch. The room was a bit small, but served it's purpose, in providing a comfortable bed, and an old-world charm, back to when it was a outdoor adventure hostel in the 1930's. Did I mention the location...

Great Hotel At Very Reasonable Price
Excellent value for money with my single room, though small, had adequate storage, basin, and tea-making facilities, all for £45! My only criticism was the fixed times for evening meal and breakfast which may be a problem for some guests. Its location is perfect for exploring Borrowdale and nearby fells, visiting Honister slate mine and via ferrata, and is on the Coast to Coast route.

A Good Place To Rest Half Way Along The Cumbria Way
We had a difficult time reaching the hotel from the walking trails. There was no signage on the trails and we ended up crossing a very wet paddock and climbing over a fence to get onto the property. If coming from the direction of Rosthwaite along the trail from the Borrowdale YHA, the easiest way is to take an offshoot of the trail down to the road a couple hundred metres before the hotel. However, without signs, and without any idea where the hotel is, you don't know do to this.

The room was spacious, clean, quiet and comfortable - everything we had hoped for as a rest half way along our walk (we stayed at YHAs otherwise, which were far less relaxing). The food was very good but this hotel clearly caters to large groups, and we had the misfortune of being there with a large group, so our dinner felt more like a feed lot. I guess this is also why you have to dine at 7pm.

The bar had some great drinks on tap and the common areas were spacious, clean and comfortable.
